A Place For Owls - how we dig in the earth

The Denver emo band's second album is a triumph

Digging in the earth can be a beginning or an end.

Plant a seed, something beautiful and tangible can grow, thrive, flourish.

That same ground is the place where we bury our loved ones.

Life and death in the dirt.

Hello and goodbye in the ground.

Everything is temporary and fragile.

The record opens with “go on and say it all / you’re not okay at all.”Admit it to yourself.

Halfway through, they sing “find your friends and hold them close.” Accept help.

The record closes with “help me let the right ones in.” Move forward together.

The journey of this record takes us from an admission of struggle, to the opportunity of struggle. It’s okay to not be okay. Name it, accept it, turn to a trusted friend. Have faith as you reach out to your people. Have faith as you reach out and put your hands in the soil and begin the work of cultivating the world you want to see. A kinder, loving world where our shared humanity is celebrated.

The band sent me an advance copy of this record a few months ago. Music has always been an escape from the horrors of the real world, and a record that touches on unspeakable grief touched me at a time when I was (and am) fighting through unspeakable grief of my own every day. I believe this record will give hope to many hearts, lift up downtrodden spirits, and put a smile on frowning faces. That’s the power of their music. Music is magic.

This record is a patient friend. It is a warm, cozy old sweater that’s been with you for years, a piece of fabric that feels like an extension of yourself rather than a garment to be worn. It is tender, it is kind, it is accepting. It is greater than the sum of its parts and influences. It is a seed of hope planted with the utmost affection and intention. This is a band in full bloom.

Hope is a weapon. If you plant it, it will grow.

Get to work today. Get your hands dirty. Keep digging.
